CONSTRUCTION
Construction is another “event” that deserves to be included because of the unique requirements to chronicle a project in its various stages.
There is a need to consider special lenses, filters and a camera with a good sensor if you want to avoid using flash when shooting indoors when the incomplete project does not have any lighting.
There some essential elements in all constructions and you cannot miss them: one is the blueprints (see below.)
The other is something which you should secure if you want to get inside the perimeter of the construction. In the trunk of my car is the hard hat and the vest that identifies me as belonging there.

When visiting a construction site to evaluate the physical progress of the construction, bear in mind that without the human element, nothing moves forward. Do not forget to acknowledge the ones who make it all happen: the workers. They really appreciate when you stop to talk to them and in most cases, are flattered if you ask their permission to take their picture.
As a matter of fact, I created a YouTube for the expressed purpose of highlighting the skilled workers in a construction site. If you can spare the time now, you can click on it now or return later. It is 6 minutes long.

There are instances when you can capture a worker outdoors, when you have no brightness concerns and some
other times the skill worker is inside. Make sure that you include minorities in your coverage.

I own a Canon Power Shot SX 500 IS which I use when I need extra zooming capabilities, since it can reach 800 mm. Its sensor is not particularly good, but I use it when lighting conditions are bright, with excellent results as you can see in this Construction Tab of this website.
I also own a Canon EOS SL1 to which I attach my 8 mm fish eye Rokinon lens for those situations when I need it.
For the most part, I use a Canon EOS 70D to which I have a Tamron 16 mm - 300 mm zoom lens attached all the time.

The two images above on the left, were taken with my Canon Sure Shot SX 500IS using the full range of 800 mm. The images above on the right were taken with a normal lens. You have to look very carefully to see the workers.
This is the advantage that a very wide angle lens gives you. For this particular shot (which I used in the cover of one of my books) I used a 10 mm lens.
However, as you will see below, these wide angle lenses have an inherent disadvantage and it is the distortion that they create You will be able to compare a before and after correction with Photoshop using their distortion correction feature.

I also want to invite you to consider using a circular polarizing filter to dramatically improve the blue in the sky and increase the contrast with the clouds. The images below are for you to compare with and without the polarizing filter.
For documenting the progress of our church’s sanctuary remodeling below, I needed a picture of the choir by the altar. To ensure that I capture every row, I had to photograph from the balcony, which is about 300 feet away. On top of that, I had to use and f8 lens opening to also ensure that I had enough depth of field to have the choir front and back row sharp.
Even when you have to resort to flash, you may need an adapter which can multiply the strength of the flash. Such is the case with this DSLR pop-up flash booster Its fresnel lens delivers 8X more light. The left image below shows the impact that the flash at the altar had and the right image below shows that adapter that I used to achieve my goal.
